Two Geisinger Fellows and Physician Honored with Cytopathology Awards

DANVILLE, Pa. – Two fellows from the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine’s Cytopathology Fellowship Program recently won awards at the U.S. & Canadian Academy of Pathology’s 111th annual meeting. The meeting was held March 19–24 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The awards are intended to honor “superior performance in teaching, research, publications, and service by recognizing vision, imagination, and intuitive leadership.”

Terrance Lynn, MD, won the prestigious Stowell-Orbison Award for his abstract, poster and presentation of his work titled “TRPS1 is a Highly Sensitive and Specific Marker for Diagnosing Triple-negative Breast Carcinomas on Cytologic Samples.” This award is for trainees who are residents or fellows in pathology. Syed Abbas, MD, won the PSC (Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology)’s first prize abstract award for his abstract and poster titled “Telecytology at Remote Sites with a Portable Digital Microscope & Slide Scanner: Comparison of different scanning modalities.” Dr. Abbas was also awarded the PAPS (Pakistani-American Pathologists Society) Trainee of the Year Award.

Geisinger's Cytopathology Fellowship is a one-year program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. It provides in-depth training in diagnostic cytopathology while offering a unique multidisciplinary, subspecialty clinic environment that values and strongly supports the practice of cytopathology. The cytology laboratory is state of the art, with automated technology for specimen processing and review.

In addition, Sara Monaco, MD, system director of cytopathology and program director for the Cytopathology Fellowship, was recently awarded the 2021 President’s Award from the American Society of Cytopathology. The award was established in 1992 and is presented annually to a pathologist and/or cytotechnologist in recognition of extraordinary contributions to the society.
