DANVILLE, Pa. – Five Geisinger maternity centers were named “Birthing-Friendly” hospitals last week by the Biden administration. The new designation recognizes hospitals for high-quality maternity care and as baby- and family-friendly institutions that aim to improve outcomes in maternity care.

The five Geisinger hospitals recognized were:
-       Geisinger Medical Center, Danville
-       Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital
-       Geisinger Lewistown Hospital
-       Geisinger Wyoming Valley, Wilkes-Barre
-       Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton

“It is an honor to see that every hospital at which we deliver babies received this distinction,” said Sandra Culbertson, M.D., chair of the Geisinger Women and Children’s Institute. “This designation reflects our systemwide emphasis on safety, quality and commitment to the health of mothers and babies in our communities.”

The new designation is part of a broader effort to address the nation’s maternal health crisis. Despite medical advances, the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth in the world, according to March of Dimes, which focuses on the health equity gap in the health care system that puts women and babies of color at greater risk.
