Message from the program director

Thank you for your interest in our fellowship program! Over a century ago, Abigail Geisinger instructed the surgeon-in-chief of her new hospital to “make it the best.” In that tradition we at Geisinger work daily to “be the best.” Whether it is in clinical care, teaching, research or service to our community, we strive to “be the best” in all that we do. We are honored that you would consider us as a location to continue your graduate medical education in hematology and medical oncology.

We’re in northeastern Pennsylvania, a region more than 600,000 people call home. We are 2 hours west of New York City and 2 hours north of Philadelphia by car. You would work and learn primarily in centers in the cities of Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. The Henry Cancer Center at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center opened a 95,000-square-foot addition in 2022. This state-of-the-art facility includes a dedicated oncology inpatient unit, outpatient clinics for Hematology/Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Palliative Medicine. This facility also contains women’s imaging, PET-CT scanning, infusion and apheresis services. A second cancer center at Dickson City outside of Scranton opened in 2025 and is the location of the General Hematology/Oncology Outpatient rotations in the second year (PGY-5).

Our curriculum covers the breadth and depth of hematology and medical oncology. We believe that learners stimulate a spirit of inquiry that drives clinical research, implementation research and quality improvement. We welcome learners as our colleagues. Not only do we provide a supportive learning environment for fellows, but you, our fellows, will contribute to the culture and excellence of Geisinger. We are at our best when we are teaching and learning together.

Thank you, again for your consideration of the Geisinger Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship – Northeast. We enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to work and learn with you over the next 3 years.
